A Night at the Gardens by the Bay

When I visited Singapore in 2013, I have seen the Gardens by the Bay from afar. It has opened only over a year, but I didn’t have the opportunity to step foot in this popular Garden City. Returning to Singapore for another trip, this destination was at the top of my must-visit list during a brief stay in this Southeast Asian nation-state.

Getting There

From Lorong Road, we took a bus going to Marina Bay Sands. Alighting at Marina Bay Sands, we entered the Sands Expo and Convention Centre, walked the overhead bridge passing through the hotel and to the Dragonfly Bridge, which already gave us a great view of Marina Bay Sands.

Leaving Gardens by the Bay, we passed through Marina Bay Sands and exited to the waterfront, which has a view of the Merlion and Fullerton Hotel. We walked to the Art Science Museum, crossed the Helix Bridge and went further to the Esplanade.

There are several buses that pass by Marina Bay Sands. For those taking the MRT, alight at the Bayfront MRT Station. If you are taking a private vehicle, there are parking areas at the Visitor Centre, Bay East Garden, Satay by the Bay, and the Meadow.

Attractions

It was sundown when we arrived at the Gardens by the Bay. We opted to wait for the Garden Rhapsody light and sound show, which happens every 7:45 and 8:45 in the evening. The iconic Supertree Grove, which serves as a vertical garden, emitted its colorful lights that changed with the harmony of the music. The Supertrees come alive at night while the moon shone brightly on it. There were those walking the OCBC Skyway at the upper portion of the Supertrees, which can be entered at a fee of S$8 per adult.

We had dinner at the nearby Supertree Dining that offered international cuisines. My Singaporean blogger friend, Bernard Tan, treated us to a sumptuous meal of Nasi Lemak, some local noodles and spicy soup. I like the ambiance at the Supertree Dining as well as the food choices and their taste.

It would be good to spend a whole day at Gardens by the Bay, I reckoned. Otherwise, I would have also visited the cool-dry Flower Dome and the cool-moist Cloud Forest and explored both conservatories, which is at S$28 per adult. The Flower Dome is like a giant flower field kept inside a controlled greenhouse.

Kids, on the other hand, can have a fun time at the Far East Organization Children’s Garden. There are play zones, tree houses, water play area, and Amphitheatre for performances and shows. The whole family can enjoy the Bay East Garden, which is a lush open space of greens. Here, children can bike or skate around while adults can jog and bike. Friends and families can have a picnic on the grass.

There’s a lake in Gardens by the Bay as well various art installations that visitors can enjoy. The best thing is that there are various amenities that can be explored without any fee. It provides a wonderful view of the bay and allows visitors and locals to relax in a tranquil setting just within reach.
