Driving to the mountains for the first time, I wrestled with the steering wheel but was soon rewarded with the breathtaking beauty of the scenery at Balay Manuela in Patag, Silay City. Located just less than an hour from Bacolod City, the capital of the province of Negros Occidental in the Visayas region of the Philippines, the journey to this serene retreat was nothing short of scenic.
Taking the newly constructed Bacolod-Negros Occidental Economic Highway from Brgy. Granada in Bacolod, we drove towards the uphill portion of Silay City. Guided by Google Maps, we traversed winding roads before finally arriving at Balay Manuela. Keep in mind though that during our visit, we noticed varying mobile network signals, with Globe losing coverage in the upper areas while Smart Communications remained reliable for internet connection.
There’s nothing much to see on the road to indicate if we were on the right road to Balay Manuela. Despite lacking signages to Balay Manuela, following directions to Barracuda Resort was sufficient to find this hidden gem just before Barracuda Resort’s entrance.
About Patag
Patag, a barangay found in the foothills of Silay City, is a haven for nature enthusiasts and history buffs alike. Known for its mountain resorts and camping sites, Patag holds historical significance as the Japanese military’s last stand in Western Visayas during World War II.
A companion mentioned of a hospital and I later found out that the area once hosted a pre-war hospital for tuberculosis patients, further adding to its rich heritage. For those seeking further adventure, Patag offers view decks and waterfalls, but we chose to fully enjoy the amenities of Balay Manuela for our weekend retreat. This blend of natural beauty and historical intrigue makes Patag a fascinating destination to explore.
About Balay Manuela
Balay Manuela is a charming blend of traditional Filipino architecture and modern comforts. Modeled after the “balay na bato” (stone house), its second-floor wooden structure and veranda evoke nostalgia while incorporating contemporary touches. The ground level features an al fresco living area, complemented by a covered dining and grilling space. A small but inviting pool offers a refreshing escape, although the cool mountain breeze is often enough to ward off the sun’s warmth. A zen-like garden opens up to the majestic peaks of Mt. Mandalagan, completing the tranquil atmosphere.
The property caters to both small and large groups. During our stay, 25 of us rented the entire house, which includes two dormitory-style rooms. A separate kitchen with an upper-floor balcony offers convenience, while the common al fresco area is equipped with board games and a TV for videoke sessions. However, guests are reminded to tone down singing by 10:00 p.m. to respect the neighbors, although nearby resorts occasionally extend their festivities until midnight.
Getting To Balay Manuela
Reaching Balay Manuela is an adventure in itself. Starting from Bacolod City, we took the Bacolod-Negros Occidental Economic Highway at Barangay Granada, which was near our place, and navigated towards the Bacolod-Silay Airport. We went around the periphery of the airport and from there, the uphill drive through Silay City was both thrilling and scenic.
Without clear signages going to Balay Manuela, we relied on Google Maps and kept an eye out for markers leading to Barracuda Resort, which ensured we didn’t lose our way. Balay Manuela is located just beside Barracuda Resort, the latter being a bigger and more known destination than the former. The route included charming stops like Duyan Cafe and a small stream, adding to the journey’s charm.
For those interested about Balay Manuela, which turned out to be own by the sister of an acquaintance, you may find them at their Facebook page Balay Manuela or contact them by email at [email protected] or 0908 810 9223.
More to Explore in Negros
My first visit to Patag was a delightful revelation. As a native Negrense, I realized there are still countless corners of my province and the island of Negros waiting to be explored. Balay Manuela provided a perfect introduction to this mountain haven, and I look forward to returning to Patag to discover its local cafes, other resorts, and hidden treasures. For now, the memories of our weekend escape remain etched in my heart, a reminder of the beauty that lies just beyond the city’s edge.
