First-time at Le Bistro D’Agathe

Almost everyday, I pass by this corner house with red door and artsy walls. A signage states “Le Bistro D’Agathe“. Though I lived within the neighborhood, I’ve never actually tried the place. I was more familiar with the old restaurant housed in that corner lot, Fat Michael’s Place. But after it closed down and the new bistro took its place, I have never found time to visit it.

Until tonight when my housemate, Emma Rose, and I went out to have dinner. Tired of the usual fast food joints in the area, I suggested we try that French restaurant. Since it looked cozy and homey, I figured they wouldn’t turn us away if we show up with our humble get-up — shirt, jogging pants (I wore tight pants), and slippers. I warned my housemate that the food might be costly, like around P150 to P200 (about USD5 or less).

When I buzzed on the doorbell and the French owner, Chef Patrice Delobbe, let us in their bistro and art gallery, I began to think twice as I was sure we came unprepared. There was a long table complete with a table setting. The glasses suggested champagne or wine. And it seemed our slippers were out of place in its small but classy ambiance.

But they entertained us as well and showed their menu. I first looked at the prices, making sure I brought enough money to pay our dinner. The food varied from P200 to P950 (approximately USD5 to USD23). They had appetizers (starters), the main course, and dessert. They also have set menu complete with all courses. At first glance, it may seem expensive but when you try the food and the quality (it’s authentic French cooking), the price is quite right.

Not prepared for this kind of dinner, we ordered the Terrine or the French meatloaf and the Pasta Bolognese and split it into two. The meatloaf was delicious, with a taste resembling that of a pâté. The bolognese had ground meat and tomatoes. We liked both foods, which do not have too strong herbs or seasoning.

Aside from the good food, the bistro also has a beautiful ambiance, supplemented by a relaxing French house music. It can accommodate about 20 people, making it cozy and intimate, ideal for small gatherings. Paintings fill the walls, which can be bought at reasonable prices. French movies can also be rented as long as you return them on time.

Another French guy was very attentive to our needs. I failed to get his name but he mentioned that the artworks inside the restaurant were his. I even told him that we seemed not dressed appropriately for the bistro but he brushed my comment aside, indicating we were more than welcome even when we were in our “jogging” outfit. I asked him if I could take pictures from my camera phone, its battery was almost dying on me at that moment, and he readily agreed. Emma wasn’t able to bring her phone so she could take some snapshots, too. That was how unprepared we were for this dining experience. We made small talk with him and he responded to many of our queries.

For one, the bistro does not accept credit cards, so bring your cash when you decide to dine in here one day. You can also make reservations at +63947-5192148 or through e-mail [email protected]. Le Bistro D’Agathe is located at 1154-A Rodriguez St., Bangkal, Makati City. It is near South Super Highway behind the Makati View Apartelle. What’s even more interesting to visit this area are the thrift shops a few blocks away from the bistro.

So, my curiosity was finally satisfied. I plan to return and try out more of its food offering. This time, I’d be wearing more appropriate clothes and I’ll be ready with an empty stomach that can accommodate various courses for a meal. Maybe I can even try their wine, too. And I can make a better review of the bistro, with more photos to show off.
