On June 5, 2024, Park Inn by Radisson Bacolod played host to a remarkable gathering of media friends, bloggers, artists, and distinguished guests, all converging to celebrate the opening of “The Tales of the Psyche: Navigating Our Mental Odyssey.” This compelling exhibit, the eighth installation at the hotel’s Art Cove, is a testament to the power of art in addressing critical societal issues—specifically, mental health.
Meet the Artist: Sheila Marie Basio
This latest exhibit features the works of Ms. Sheila Marie Basio, a self-taught artist from Escalante, Negros Occidental, marking her third solo exhibition. The event was a vibrant mix of artistic expression and heartfelt discussion, offering a visual narrative that delves deep into the complexities of mental health.
Basio, a retired teacher, meditator, yogini, and mindfulness advocate, has created an array of pieces that are as diverse in medium as they are in message. Her exploration of watercolor, oil, and acrylic paints provides a multifaceted look at the battles of mental illness, self-empowerment, and the choice to embrace life over defeat. As she poignantly states, “Art has always been a medium for expression, and through these works, I have attempted to capture the complexities, struggles, and triumphs associated with mental health. Each piece tells a story—sometimes of despair, sometimes of hope, but always of resilience.”
Art Cove: A Beacon for Art Lovers
The Art Cove at Park Inn by Radisson Bacolod has once again proven to be a beacon for the arts community in Bacolod City. The gallery’s current exhibition is not only a visual treat but also a platform that encourages conversations about mental health, fostering empathy and offering solace to those who might be struggling in silence. Archie Javellana, the hotel’s Rooms Division Manager, expressed this sentiment perfectly: “Here at Art Cove, we consider ourselves privileged to host such a profound and timely exhibit. In an age where the importance of mental health cannot be overstated, through Ms. Sheila’s art, we are encouraged to appreciate beauty and embrace the full range of our shared human experience.”
The ribbon-cutting ceremony was a highlight of the event, led by Ms. Sheila Marie Basio herself, alongside notable figures such as Patty Jane Ku Ong, Treasurer of the Art Association of Bacolod–Negros, City Councilor of Victorias Hon. Joji Larraga, and Mr. Charlie Co, a renowned Filipino contemporary visual artist and co-owner of Orange Project. These esteemed guests added a touch of prestige and recognition to an already significant occasion.
