A Guide to First-time DIY Travel Abroad

Embarking on your first DIY (Do-It-Yourself) travel adventure abroad is an exciting and enriching experience. I’ve written a post about doing a DIY travel in the Philippines, but going abroad is a different matter. There are so many things to consider, which is why every step is crucial.

The brighter side is that planning and organizing your trip independently allows you to customize your itinerary, discover new destinations, and create lasting memories. And it becomes more special because you own it — from beginning till end.

A friend of mine once approached me seeking advice on how to plan a trip abroad and bring those plans to life. Initially, I pondered the right words to say, recognizing that each person may have their own unique approach to crafting and executing a travel plan.

However, in my sincere attempt to offer guidance that may benefit future first-time travelers, I reflected on my past journeys. Drawing from my own experiences, as well as insights gained from readings and interactions with fellow travelers, I have compiled a set of essential steps to ensure a successful and enjoyable DIY travel experience abroad.

First-time Travels

Research and Destination Selection

The first step is to conduct thorough research on potential destinations. Consider factors such as culture, attractions, climate, safety, and budget. Explore travel blogs, guidebooks, and online resources to gain insights and inspiration. Once you have a shortlist of destinations, evaluate them based on your preferences and interests.

Prepare and Process Travel Documents

Allocate a lot of time finding out the travel requirements, such as for passport, visa or for health purposes. Prepare the necessary documents beforehand. Be sure you have a passport that is still valid for 6 months from the time you travel. If a visa is needed in your country of destination, apply and process them when you can. Note that some countries already require plane tickets when you apply for a visa, while others do not. For Filipinos, there are countries, especially in the ASEAN region that do not require for us to apply for a visa.

Itinerary Planning

Create a flexible itinerary that encompasses your desired activities, sightseeing, and experiences. Allocate sufficient time for each destination, allowing for exploration and relaxation. Consider transportation options, accommodation choices, and any necessary visa requirements. Remember to strike a balance between must-see attractions and off-the-beaten-path gems.

Budgeting and Booking

Establish a realistic budget that covers transportation, accommodation, meals, activities, and contingencies. Research and compare prices to find the best deals on flights, accommodation, and tours. Utilize online platforms and booking websites to secure reservations and make advance arrangements. Keep track of your expenses throughout the trip to stay within budget.

Review Travel Requirements Before Your Trip

Have your passport, airline tickets and accommodation reservations on hand. Before you leave and arrive in the Philippines, be sure to fill out the etravel form online. Same for countries that require online embarkation cards. You can also do online check-ins with your airline a day or hours before your flight. Make sure you packed the right wear for travel and you have all your necessary items in your luggage. But keep them at a minimum, otherwise, you will go over your baggage weight allocation.

Stay Flexible and Embrace the Unexpected when you Travel

While planning is crucial, it’s essential to remain adaptable during your journey. Embrace spontaneity and be open to new experiences. Leave room for unplanned adventures and serendipitous encounters. Remember that the most memorable moments often arise from unexpected detours and surprises.

Embarking on a DIY travel adventure is a remarkable endeavor that allows you to carve your own path and create cherished memories. By following these essential steps and incorporating your own personal touch, you’ll be well-prepared to embark on a fulfilling and unforgettable journey abroad.
