5 Days in Central Vietnam: Da Nang, Hue, Hoi An

Central Vietnam unfolds like a vibrant tapestry, weaving together history, culture, and natural beauty into three enchanting destinations: Da Nang, Hue, and Hoi An. Each city tells its own story: Da Nang dazzles with modernity against a backdrop of pristine beaches; Hue whispers tales of imperial grandeur through ancient citadels and royal tombs; while Hoi An enchants visitors with lantern-lit streets that seem frozen in time.

When we arrived late at night in Da Nang, the city greeted us with quiet anticipation, its skyline shimmering under starlit skies. With weary eyes but eager hearts, we checked into our hotel and drifted off to sleep, dreaming of the adventures ahead.

Central Vietnam

Day 1: Exploring Da Nang, where mountains and sea meet in Central Vietnam

Breakfast Buffet at Mitisa Hotel

Our day in Central Vietnam began with an indulgent breakfast buffet at Mitisa Hotel, where the spread offered both local delicacies and international favorites. The aroma of freshly brewed Vietnamese coffee mingled with steaming bowls of pho, setting the perfect tone for a day full of exploration.

Ba Na Hills Day Trip

At 8:00 am, our guide from Klook picked us up from the hotel for a day trip to the Sun World Ba Na Hills. Perched high in the mountains, this whimsical destination felt like stepping into a fairytale. The iconic Dragon Bridge, held aloft by giant stone hands, left us awestruck, while the French Village transported us to Europe without leaving Vietnam.

Son Tra Night Market

After returning to the hotel for a short rest, we ventured out to Son Tra Night Market. The bustling market came alive with vibrant colors, tantalizing street food stalls, and handmade souvenirs. As we sampled grilled seafood skewers and sweet coconut pancakes, the lively atmosphere enveloped us in pure joy.

Fire and Water Show at Dragon Bridge

To cap off the evening, we made our way back to the Dragon Bridge for its famed fire and water show. Against the darkened sky, flames danced atop the bridge while cascading waters added drama to the spectacle—a breathtaking finale to an unforgettable first day in Central Vietnam.

Day 2: A Sojourn to Hue, the historic city of Central Vietnam

Morning Departure to Hue

By 8:00 am, we were picked up by our local guide for a day trip to Hue. Our journey took us through the scenic Hai Van Tunnel, offering glimpses of turquoise lagoons and lush greenery. Our first stop was Viet Pearl in Lang Co, where we paused for coffee with a view that left us breathless.

Mausoleum of Emperor Khải Định

Next, we visited the opulent Mausoleum of Emperor Khải Định, a stunning blend of Eastern and Western architectural styles. Intricate mosaics and ornate carvings adorned the tomb, reflecting the emperor’s vision of eternity.

Lunch and Afternoon Exploration

We savored a hearty lunch at Biet Phu Thao Nhi Restaurant before heading to Thien Mu Pagoda, an iconic symbol of Hue. Standing tall on the banks of the Perfume River, the pagoda exuded serenity. Our final stop was the majestic Imperial Citadel of Hue, where centuries-old walls stood resilient despite the ravages of time and war. A gentle rain added a poetic touch as we explored the ruins.

As dusk fell, we returned to Da Nang, just in time to watch the sun dip below the horizon. For dinner, we feasted on Mỳ Quảng at B Mua Đà Nẵng, savoring the rich flavors of this regional specialty.

Day 3: Discovering Da Nang’s Hidden Gems

Attending Mass at Da Nang Cathedral

On Easter Sunday, we started our day attending mass at the charming Da Nang Cathedral, affectionately known as the Pink Cathedral. Its pastel facade and serene ambiance provided a peaceful start to the morning.

Han Market and Da Nang Museum of Cham Sculpture

From there, we walked to Han Market, a bustling hub of activity where vendors sold everything from fresh produce to handcrafted trinkets. Afterward, we delved deeper into Da Nang’s heritage at the Da Nang Museum of Cham Sculpture. Housing one of the world’s largest collections of Cham artifacts, the museum offered fascinating insights into this ancient civilization.

Helio Night Market

The afternoon was spent relaxing back at the hotel before venturing out again when the heat subsided. We sought the cool interiors of Vincom Plaza Da Nang, where we found a Jollibee! But we didn’t stay for long as we headed to Garden Cafe Coxi to wait for Helio Night Market to open. This vibrant market buzzed with energy, featuring live music performances, arcade games, and endless rows of food stalls serving everything from crispy bánh xèo to refreshing sugarcane juice. It was the perfect place to end another delightful day.

Day 4: A Colorful Night at Hoi An

Lazy Morning

The next morning, we had a lazy morning as our tour started in the afternoon. After breakfast and an extended rest, we checked out the Da Nang Fresco Village, which was just behind our hotel. Lunch was at Ông Lei Đà Nẵng: Korean food in Da Nang, just conveniently located beside our hotel.

Afternoon and Evening Tour

We embarked on another adventure we booked online. Our itinerary included stops at the Son Tra Peninsula, famous for its Monkey Mountain and Linh Ung Pagoda, and Marble Mountain, a cluster of limestone peaks dotted with caves and temples.

Finally, we arrived in Hoi An, where lanterns swayed gently in the breeze, and the Thu Bon River sparkled under moonlight. Dinner at Blue Gecko Restaurant was a culinary highlight, followed by free time to wander Hoi An’s dreamy Old Town—a photographer’s paradise.

Day 5: Farewell to Da Nang

Beach Relaxation and Departure

On our last day in Central Vietnam, we checked out of the hotel and spent the morning exploring Da Nang Fresco Village, a quaint area showcasing traditional Vietnamese artistry. Later, we relaxed on My Khe Beach, letting the waves wash away any lingering stress. Overlooking the ocean, we enjoyed a leisurely lunch at Nhà hàng Làng Cá Seafood Restaurant. We took a nap on one of the beach chairs at My Khe Beach, enjoying the breeze. As the afternoon wore on, we sipped cold drinks at Phe La Café, savoring the past days and reflecting on our journey.

With bags packed and hearts full, we headed to the airport for our evening flight. Central Vietnam had unveiled itself to us—a harmonious blend of history, culture, and natural splendor. From the fantasy world of Ba Na Hills to the historic grandeur of Hue, the timeless charm of Hoi An, and the modern yet laid-back vibe of Da Nang, every moment here was a celebration of life itself. Whether you’re seeking adventure, tranquility, or inspiration, Central Vietnam promises an experience that lingers long after your journey ends.
