Senado Square: Where Time Stands Still

Walking into Senado Square feels like stepping into a bygone era. The mesmerizing mosaic cobblestone streets underfoot, meticulously arranged in a wave-like pattern, serve as a visual homage to the Portuguese influences that have shaped Macau for centuries. The pastel-hued neo-classical buildings that line the square, each with their own unique architectural flair, transport you to a European village. Yet, the ever-present Chinese red lanterns and bustling markets serve as a reminder of Macau’s unique blend of cultures.

Leal Senado Building: A Monument to History

At the heart of Senado Square stands the Leal Senado Building, an architectural gem that radiates grandeur and history. This iconic yellow-and-white edifice was once the seat of Macau’s municipal government during the Portuguese colonial era. Today, it houses a museum that delves into Macau’s rich history, a journey that starts with the early Portuguese settlers and continues through to its modern-day glory.

As I ventured inside, I was immediately struck by the elegant interior, adorned with intricate tile work and period furnishings. The exhibits take you on a voyage through time, offering insights into Macau’s pivotal role as a hub of trade and cultural exchange between East and West.

  1. Hi Claire,
I’ve been an avid reader of your blog. I will be visiting Negros next year for the first time and would like to really know the local tourist spots by using public transport. What is the jeepney fare from downtown Bacolod to Ceres North Terminal, what is the bus fare from CNT to Cadiz? Would appreciate your reply. Thanks.

    • The current minimum jeepney fare is PHP 13 and the modernized jeepney fare (air-conditioned) is PHP 15. The fare from Bacolod City to Cadiz City would be around PHP 65-85 for non-airconditioned buses. I’m not sure for air-conditioned buses but it would probably be around PHP 200. Bus prices have been increasing lately so just make sure to put an allowance from these current costs by the time you visit Negros next year. Enjoy your trip!
