Staycation Chronicles: Rediscovering Joy Close to Home

In a world that often equates adventure with far-flung destinations and packed itineraries, there’s something quietly revolutionary about choosing to stay close to home. Recently, I decided to swap airport terminals for hotel lobbies and explore the joys of a staycation — and let me tell you, it was one of the most refreshing decisions I’ve made in a while. I did one last year at Park Inn by Radisson Bacolod and came back this year for another relaxing stay.

A staycation isn’t just about skipping the plane ride; it’s about giving yourself permission to relax, reconnect, and rediscover the simple pleasures that might be just a short drive away. Whether you’re craving some much-needed “me time” or looking to strengthen bonds with loved ones, a staycation can offer a surprisingly fulfilling escape without the stress of travel logistics.

Here are five reasons why I sometimes advocate for staying local:

1. No Need for Complicated Itineraries

One of the biggest perks of a staycation is how effortlessly relaxed it can be. There’s no need to cram your days with back-to-back activities or rush from one tourist spot to another. Instead, you can take your time — sleep in, enjoy a slow breakfast, maybe wander around a nearby market or park — all at your own pace.

Since you’re not on a tight schedule or trying to “see it all,” the pressure lifts. You’re free to savor each moment, which makes the experience feel more like a true vacation than a checklist.

2. A Staycation Gives Me More Me Time (Or We Time)

A staycation gives you the space to either indulge in solitude or deepen connections with family and friends. For me, this meant I can spend time in a new environment, yet not totally foreign.

My sister and I checked into the Park Inn by Radisson Bacolod, where the cozy yet modern rooms offered a perfect balance of comfort and style. Waking up without the usual morning chaos, sharing laughs over coffee, and having uninterrupted conversations felt like a luxury we don’t often allow ourselves.

3. Unwind Without the Travel Hassle

Let’s face it, traveling can be exhausting. From early flights and long drives to lost luggage and delayed departures, the journey itself can drain the joy out of a vacation before it even begins.

A staycation eliminates all of that. No packing weeks in advance, no airport security lines, no jet lag. Just grab your bag, hop in the car, and within minutes, you’re checking into your temporary home away from home.

4. Savoring Every Bite at a Staycation, All in One Place

One of the highlights of our staycation was the food, and it was all served at Arima Restaurant inside Park Inn by Radisson Bacolod. From the moment we stepped in for breakfast, we were greeted with an impressive buffet spread that featured everything from warm breads and sinangag to international favorites like eggs benedict and fresh pastries.

Later that day, we returned for lunch and were treated to comforting flavors and generous portions. The Chicken Binakol was a standout, but what truly made the meal memorable was the ease and elegance of enjoying every bite without having to go anywhere else.

5. A Staycation is Convenience at Its Finest

Another highlight of our staycation was how convenient everything was. The Park Inn by Radisson Bacolod is connected to SM City Bacolod, so whenever we wanted to do a bit of shopping, grab a snack, or catch a movie, it was just a short walk away. No need to navigate unfamiliar streets or rely on taxis because everything we needed was right there.

This seamless blend of relaxation and accessibility made our staycation feel both luxurious and practical, a rare combination that made the whole experience even more enjoyable.

Stay Closer, Live Fuller

Who knew that happiness could be found just down the road? Our staycation reminded me that sometimes, the magic isn’t in how far you go but it’s in how deeply you experience the moment. Whether it’s through laughter with a sibling, a steaming hot soup, or the quiet comfort of a well-designed room, joy has a way of showing up when you least expect it.

So next time you’re dreaming of an escape, remember: paradise doesn’t always require a passport. Sometimes, all it takes is a change of scenery — and a really comfortable bed (and pillow) to lay your head.
