“Whether you are a first-time adventurer or a seasoned traveler looking for something different, I hope this book will encourage you to take a step into the world of adventure.”
These are the words that struck me, igniting a longing hidden deep within me that has been dormant for years, yet threatening to erupt anytime soon. I am a traveler who only takes on a journey at a limited time, bound by the days I need to fulfill at work and mostly confined within the three walls of my cubicle. I have read fellow travelers who left their jobs to take on a long-term traveling — a desire I have been wanting to satisfy, yet restricted by my fear of the unknown.
I first met Nellie Huang (@Wildjunket) online via Twitter, through my constantly expanding circle of traveler-friends. It was when we became finalists in the medical tourism blog contest of the Tourism Authority of Thailand that I personally came to know Nellie. This was followed by a visit to my country, the Philippines.
When I learned that she has a book and it was about adventure traveling, I suddenly felt ripples of excitement to read her Adventure Traveler’s Handbook. I’ve read her Wild Junket e-magazines and have been fascinated by the travels she has done.
It was very informative as she detailed on tips, useful links and mobile apps. Moreso, her stories and the experiences of other travelers engage the reader, keeping him hooked on the book. Ergo, not only it is practical but it is also very inspiring. I also like that she included photos that excite me, wanting me to immediately take the plunge and skydive.
My favorite part is financially preparing for a trip and she also listed down ways of getting free accommodation (and finding great unique experiences, at the same time!)
Even when I’ve finished the book, I love re-reading it and check out the information Nellie has provided. It is a good resource that you will constantly refer to whenever that travel itch catches you. I commend Nellie for coming up with this handbook and I hope that someday, I’ll be able to do all the adventures she has listed in her book.
