Mark your calendars, pack your brightest outfits, and prepare to dance, smile, and celebrate like never before!

The Birth of a Legend: The Story Behind the MassKara Festival

The MassKara Festival is more than just a spectacle. It’s a symbol of hope born from heartbreak. In the 1980s, Bacolod City faced a devastating crisis: the collapse of the sugar industry and a tragic ferry disaster that claimed many lives. Amidst the sorrow, the people of Bacolod chose to rise, not with tears, but with smiles. Thus, the MassKara Festival was born. The name MassKara is a portmanteau of “mass” and “cara” (Spanish for “face”), inspired by the elaborate, colorful masks worn by revelers, each one a bold declaration of joy in the face of adversity.

What began as a local effort to uplift spirits quickly grew into a world-renowned cultural phenomenon. Over the decades, MassKara has become the Philippines’ most iconic street festival, drawing visitors from across the globe to witness its dazzling parades, energetic dance competitions, and vibrant artistry. It’s not just a festival; it’s a testament to the Filipino spirit—resilient, creative, and always ready to smile.

A Legacy of Light: Highlights from Past MassKara Festivals

Over the years, MassKara has delivered unforgettable moments that have etched themselves into the nation’s cultural memory. Who could forget the breathtaking Street Dance and Floats Competition, where entire barangays transform into moving works of art, complete with towering floats, synchronized dancers, and masks that shimmer like rainbows under the sun?

Past festivals have also featured star-studded concerts, culinary extravaganzas showcasing Bacolod’s famous delicacies and food products, and community art installations that turn the city into an open-air gallery. The festival has also been a platform for social causes, from environmental advocacy to youth empowerment, proving that MassKara is not just about celebration, it’s about transformation.

And let’s not forget the MassKara Queen Pageant, a dazzling fusion of beauty, intelligence, and cultural pride that has launched the careers of many Bacolod-based artists and public figures. Each year, the festival grows richer in meaning, deeper in impact, and brighter in spirit.

MassKara Festival 2025: A Bolder, Brighter, More Inclusive Celebration

MassKara Festival 2025

This year, the MassKara Festival 2025 is set to redefine the celebration with a reimagined schedule and bold new initiatives. Running from October 1 to 19, with the Highlight Weekend taking center stage from October 17 to 19, the festival has been moved earlier in the month to avoid the unpredictable rains of late October, a move that promises drier streets, happier vendors, and uninterrupted fun.

“This shift not only improves the festival experience for locals and tourists, but also supports vendors and community entrepreneurs who rely on MassKara for their livelihood,” said the Bacolod Gugma Foundation Inc., the driving force behind the festival, in coordination with the City Government of Bacolod.

This year’s theme of inclusivity and representation will shine through events that celebrate the contributions of the LGBTQ+ community, senior citizens, youth, and the vibrant artists’ community—all of whom have helped shape MassKara into the cultural treasure it is today.

Festival Director Rodney Ascalon emphasized the deeper mission: “MassKara has always been about unity in joy. This year, we are making a stronger effort to ensure that every sector is seen and celebrated.”

The First Festival After-Party

After the Highlight Weekend, the city will take a brief pause from October 20 to 25, only to return with a historic finale: the first-ever Grand After-Party on October 26. This all-out celebration will feature live entertainment, DJs, dynamic performances, and a festive community atmosphere, bringing the festival to a pulsating close.

The Street and Arena Dance Competition, a beloved tradition last held in 2019, is also making a triumphant return, thanks to an announcement by Mayor Greg Gasataya, who reaffirmed the city’s commitment to youth engagement and cultural excellence.

With nearly three weeks of parades, concerts, food fairs, and grassroots events, the festival aims to be felt deeply in every barangay, especially among underserved communities. The Bacolod Gugma Foundation Inc. has accepted the challenge from Mayor Gasataya and the Sangguniang Panlungsodto manage resources wisely and ensure that the joy of MassKara reaches everyone.

To build excitement, the official launch of the MassKara 2025 logo and music video—crafted as a teaser and public invitation—will take place in September 2025.
